OUR COMMUNITY SERVICES
In a Gurdwara Sahib, several services are offered to the community, centered around the principles of Sikhism and the teachings of the Guru Granth Sahib. Here are some common services you might find:
Gurdwaras often host congregational gatherings where Sikhs come together to worship, listen to hymns (Kirtan), and engage in prayer (Ardas). These gatherings foster a sense of community and unity among Sikhs.
Kirtan, the singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, is a central aspect of Sikh worship. Accompanied by musical instruments such as the harmonium and tabla, Kirtan is performed to evoke devotion and connect with the divine.
Langar is a hallmark of Sikh hospitality and egalitarianism. Gurdwaras serve free vegetarian meals to all visitors, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or religion. Langar promotes the values of equality, humility, and seva (selfless service).
Path involves the recitation of passages from the Guru Granth Sahib. Sikh scriptures are read aloud, often in a continuous manner, as a form of meditation and spiritual practice.
Gurdwaras may offer classes to educate members of the community about Sikh scripture, history, and philosophy. These classes aim to deepen understanding and strengthen the connection to Sikh teachings.
Katha involves the exposition and interpretation of Sikh scripture and teachings. A learned individual, often a granthi (religious leader), delivers sermons to explain the significance of passages from the Guru Granth Sahib and offer insights for daily life.
Members of the community volunteer their time and resources to maintain the Gurdwara premises. This includes cleaning, upkeep of facilities, and general maintenance tasks.
Gurdwaras host various special events and celebrations throughout the year, including festivals such as Vaisakhi and Gurpurabs (birthdays of Sikh Gurus). These events feature special prayers, Kirtan performances, processions, and community meals.
Gurdwaras engage in outreach programs to serve the broader community. This may involve distributing meals to the homeless, or providing assistance during times of crisis.
